2005 Brian May Allerton Hill visit

In November 2005 I visited Brian May at Allerton Hill studio to discuss various things such as pedals and Vox AC30s. I also showed Brian the latest prototype version of the Deacy Amp which I had developed with Nigel Knight.

On one of the days Brian and I compared the white prototype amp with his original Deacy Amp and I made a recording of Brian playing both amps.

On the first day at Allerton Hill Andrew Guyton came over, and with Brian we discussed replacing the zero fret on his Red Special guitar. The zero fret was buzzing badly due to the strings wearing deep grooves into it, and it was finally time to replace it. We also discussed replacing the jack socket which had also developed problems for Brian during the recent tour.

By that stage in 2005 I had been away from guitar making and repairing for around 6 years, and felt that it was best that Andrew – who did this type of work every day –  do the work on Brian’s guitar.

During my visit I spent a day at Nigel’s home studio, and with Brian’s blessing took over my guitar ‘John’ and Brian’s original Deacy Amp. We opened up the Deacy Amp and Nigel tested various aspects of the amp.

After we had done the Deacy tests, Nigel recorded me playing ‘John’ with one of my treble boosters through the Deacy Amp. He also recorded me playing the same passages through our other Deacy Amp replicas.

During my week in London I travelled across to Bath and visited Neville Marten and Simon Bradley at Guitarist magazine. I chatted with them about the treble boosters and Vox AC30s that I had been building, and let them play  the white Deacy Amp replica that Nigel and I had built.
