Review by Brett Kingman:

Details and FAQ below:

240728 Strelly #11

Q: does the Strelly Booster use true bypass for the footswitch circuit, or buffered bypass for the footswitching?

A: True Bypass

Q: what do I use to power the pedal?

A: use either a 9V battery or a Boss style 9V adaptor with negative tip/centre polarity, 100ma minimum capacity, 2.1mm dia power jack.

Q: how long will a 9V battery last?

A: a long time. The Strelly Booster has low current consumption compared with many pedals, and consumes no greater than 1.5ma current.

Q: is there any difference in sound between using a 9V battery compared to using a 9V Boss style adaptor?

A: very little indeed – with the Strelly Booster there is hardly any difference between the sound  using a 9V battery compared to using a 9V Boss style adaptor.

Q: can I leave the guitar lead permanently plugged into the IN jack?

A: no – unplug the guitar lead from the input jack when you are not using the pedal. Like many pedals, plugging a guitar lead into the input jack turns on the power to the pedal when using either battery or 9V power adaptor.

Q: is it best to connect the Strelly Booster first in line next to the guitar – or does it sound just as good when connected down the pedal chain?

A: best to use it first in line. Similar to my other treble booster pedals, when the Strelly Booster is used with a Strat® or a Tele® guitar, the pedal will usually sound best connected first in line with a guitar cable. However if your rig is such that the Strelly Booster is fed with a low impedance signal from a pedal or tuner,  it will still sound good.

Q: how do I buy the Strelly Booster and how much does it cost?

A: the Strelly Booster pedal can be ordered by emailing me at fryerguitars@hotmail.com

Cost is $AUD457.00 plus shipping. Prices are in Australian Dollars ($AUD). For international currency conversion please visit www.xe.com/

Q: and finally, what does ‘Strelly’ mean?

A: Strelly is a name I made up which is a combination/abbreviation of Strat® and Tele® which are the two guitars that the booster was designed for. However since the pedal’s development, it has become clear that the Strelly Booster has much wider application used with guitars such as the Brian May Red Special, Gretsch, Gibson and more.

Strelly Booster background:

In May 2023 legendary Australian guitarist Ian Moss asked me if I could develop a treble booster pedal which would work well with Fender® Strat® and Tele® guitars.

For more information about Ian Moss please see:

https://fryerguitars.com/ian-moss/

At the time in May 2023 I was considering getting out of the guitar business, was very busy doing other things and was reluctant to put time and money into developing a new guitar pedal – and I told Ian this. Nevertheless because of our very good business relationship going back many years to 1988, I reconsidered and agreed to experiment developing some prototypes.

Initially I was skeptical that a treble booster would sound good with a Stratocaster® guitar, which as most people know has a thin, sinewy, trebly (but beautiful) sound.

The first prototype was in a large black re-purposed box, and was a redesigned Brian May style treble booster pedal. Essentially this was a much fatter sounding version of my Treble Booster Special pedal.

230522 #1 Strelly Booster 1st prototype

230522 #2 Strelly Booster 1st prototype

Ian tried the prototype and told me it had too much treble. I told him yes mate its a treble booster 🙂

230728 #3 Ian returned the first prototype treble booster and collected his old broken 1960 neck.  This was the guitar that Ian used most during the ‘Cold Chisel’ days (with red/pink colour body). During the years of Ian’s solo career up until 1995 the neck was fitted to an early 1970s Fender black alder body.  In 1995-96 I made a new replacement neck for Ian, and the old 1960 neck had been in my workshop (in pieces) since then.

Ian brought back the 1st prototype on 28th July 2023 and I began wondering what on earth I could do to change the basic design so that it was more flexible in its tonal settings – but still actually be a ‘treble booster’. Hmmmmm……..

Over the next few months I put the project on the ‘back burner’ and wondered whether I should abandon the project or persevere with it. Later in the year inspiration struck and I redesigned the basic circuit to try some new ideas – things I hadn’t tried before.

I made two versions of a second prototype pedal which allowed me to change many parameters while playing – to importantly hear how this sounded and whether I was making progress. When using my blue Strat® played through the Vox AC30, I began to like a lot how the new prototype was sounding.

My friend Milton Brown took the first prototype in early January 2024 and tried it with his Fender® amps. Milton used the pedal live on stage with his band and was very enthusiastic about the sound that the prototype gave.

The second prototype was sent to Shaun Klinger to get his thoughts on it. Shaun made some very good suggestions and was able to play the pedal much louder than I could in my workshop, and also had small and large amps such as Fender® and PRS to test through.

In late January 2024 I changed both prototypes to assess the front end further. Milton, Shaun and I agreed that this slightly modified version sounded superb. Through the process Shaun and I had kept Ian in the loop about developments in the booster and although very busy on several projects in Australia and overseas Ian said he was very keen to try it.

In April 2024 I designed the box layout and the main pcb was designed with John Mesiti. A quantity of pcbs were ordered and I built 2 bare aluminium test pedals to check that everything fitted and worked as planned. Ian tried one of the prototypes and told us that he liked it a lot. The other new prototype was given to Milton Brown who then used it live and in rehearsals with his lovely sounding old 1964 Strat®, and Milton said that he thought the pedal was perfect. I sent Shaun the box pictured below along with components and he built a prototype pedal which he has used since then in his live pedalboard.

With graphic artist Hourie (with whom I have done many guitar pedal and business designs since 2005), we then worked on the graphic design and layout of the box.

50 boxes were ordered from USA drilled and powdercoated in Galaxy Purple Sparkle colour. In early July 2024 at Adam’s screenprinting factory, we did the screenprinting on the boxes.

Strelly Booster used as ‘intermediate boost/drive pedal’ with Red Special guitar > Treble Booster Touring/Super/Deluxe > Strelly Booster > Mayday distortion > Vox MV50 AC amp:

On Thursday 18th July 2024 upon the suggestion of my friend Daizo from Japan, I tried the Strelly Booster with the Brian May Red Special guitar, Fryer Treble Booster Touring and Mayday distortion pedal, plugged into the Vox AC30 and then the Vox MV50 amp. Prior to this test, I expected that the Strelly Booster would sound alright with the BM guitar and pedals, but not as awesome sounding as it has turned out. On my YouTube channel there are several GoPro YouTube videos where I demonstrate this combination. This was quite an unexpected bonus for a pedal designed to be at its best with Strats® and Teles® ! 🙂

Daizo has reported to me that the Fryer Treble Booster Super and Fryer Treble Booster Deluxe pedals also sound extremely good used with the Red Special guitar >  Strelly Booster >  Mayday > Vox MV50 AC amp combination.

All the best, Greg Fryer

21st July 2024:

Over the last few days I have made several GoPro videos featuring the Strelly Booster used in ‘Brian May Red Special mode’ with the Strelly Booster acting as an intermediate boost/drive pedal between the Treble Booster Touring and the Fryer 2015 Mayday distortion pedal, pedals being plugged into either the Vox AC30 Normal Channel or the Vox MV50 amp.

The Strelly Booster has been designed as a treble booster/drive pedal for Strats® and Teles®; and to my surprise it has worked perfectly with the Brian May Red Special guitar pedals and amps – as an intermediate boost/drive pedal to add more saturation and drive to the TB Touring signal into Mayday distortion pedal.

11th July 2024:

Today I was over at Adam’s factory helping him with the screenprinting of the new ‘Strelly Booster’ guitar effect pedal.
The Strelly is a versatile treble booster designed to suit the tonal requirements of Fender® Strats® and Teles® – will be available soon made by myself and Shaun Klinger 🙂

24th June 2024:

Today Shaun Klinger made a quick home video using his Strelly Booster aluminium prototype pedal through his PRS Custom 50 amp. Delay is the only other effect added.

Shaun is playing a rosewood fingerboard Strat® with standard single coil pickups. Once the powdercoated boxes arrive from USA and are screenprinted, Shaun and I will be making the new Strelly Booster and I will post full details here. The new pedal should be available in mid-late July 2024. Nice playing Shaun!

Strelly Booster background:

In early-mid 2023 Australian guitar legend Ian Moss asked me if I could develop a treble booster pedal which would work well with his Fender® Stratocaster® guitars – all of which use standard single coil pickups.

This project sent me back to the drawing board scratching my head several times, making me wonder what on earth could sound great as a treble booster to suit the unusual tonal requirements of the twangy trebly Fender® Strat® single coil pickups.

Finally after several re-draws and revisions I am now happy to announce that the Strelly Booster will be available soon! Shaun Klinger and I will be building the new pedals, and a release date of late June 2024 is expected  (barring any unexpected delays).

In mid February 2024 I visited well known YouTube guitar gear reviewer Brett Kingman in Melbourne. For the interview I brought the 3 BM Fryer Treble Booster pedals: Touring Super and Deluxe, Deacy Amp and Kz RS Jnr Hybrid guitar. I also took along the final prototype Strelly Booster (in large black test box format pictured below).

Brett is a Strat® aficionado and has been playing Stratocasters® professionally for decades. Because he reviews so many pedals designed for Strats® I knew it was important to get his views on this new pedal.

After the Brian May gear interviews were finished, I pulled out the Strelly Booster box to show Brett – he was aware that Ian had asked me to develop this pedal.

At first Brett was stand-offish, saying ‘look I don’t really think a treble booster is going to work very well with a Strat®’ but was persuaded by me and Shaun to plug in his Strat® and give it a go.

The pedal was plugged in and Brett immediately raised his eyebrows. He started tweaking the knobs to explore its sounds (the pedal has 4 knobs which give a lot of tonal and drive flexibility), and after trying the pedal for around 10 mins said ‘Wow I want one!’.

The three amigos in Melbourne 🙂

16th April 2024 Strelly Booster aluminium box prototype – final format

240503 Strelly Booster test box and 2015 version Mayday distortion pedal on Deacy setting – a surprisingly good sound!

On 3rd May 2024 I did some interesting experiments using the Strelly Booster test box, 2015 version Mayday distortion pedal (set on Deacy Amp sound) into the Brilliant Channel of my Vox AC30 amp.

I didn’t think this would sound very good with the thin sinewy sounding Strat®, but was surprised by how good it actually was. It got me thinking this might lead to something interesting. There may be a distortion pedal ahead later in the year which Shaun and I can develop which would suit the Strelly Booster and Strats®!

When the drilled and powdercoated boxes arrive and we are screenprinting them, I will post more photos.

Cheers n beers,

Greg
