Mark Reynolds 1998 Red Special restoration photos

Thanks to Mark Reynolds for use of his great photos.

On Monday 4th May 1998, I travelled to Leicester in England. Mark Reynolds had asked his step father Paul whether it was possible for me to use his spray painting booth (after business hours) to spray paint the clear coats of Rustins Plastic Coating on Brian May’s Red Special neck and body. Mark’s step father kindly agreed to this, and his furniture making factory proved to be a very well setup and organised business which was perfect for the job.

i) Preparation: masking up, wiping over surfaces to be painted with degreaser wax and contaminant remover

ii) spray painting with Rustins Plastic Coating (original formula Rustins supplied by Martin James and Richard Foxell of Foxell and James)

iii) Late at night Mark, Jamie (Mark’s son) and I carefully took the Red Special body and neck plus all spray painting equipment back to his house in Leicester. Mark kindly allowed me to stay overnight and I bunked down in the loungeroom. I remember hardly sleeping a wink that night, constantly thinking about the importance of the Red Special work and worrying about what might go wrong. Fortunately things worked out fine  🙂

Tuesday 5th May 1998:

A very tired but relieved me! Play that funky music white boy 😉

Playing Mark’s home made Red Special replica, a really nice guitar!

A few more photos to come later……….
